basic skills programme

Day 1

0:00 · Warm-up
0:20
· Demonstrate the backhand and forehand throwing techniques, including pivoting (youtube tutorial), setup throwing partners, and walk around correcting everyone's technique.
0:35 · Introduce a concept of balance into throwing, and do the "throw short, when tired" drill.
0:50 · Demonstrate a vertical stack using cones as players and point out its passing lanes in relation to the force. Explain what a short and deep cut is, and the importance of clearing the passing lane if not open.
1:00 · Do the "cutting short vs. deep" drill. Make the following observations during the drill: (1) Start your cut when your defender is not looking or is off-balance. (2) Run hard to make your cut believable. (3) Make a sharp turn by surprise to gain advantage in opposite direction.

0:45 · Do a "fitness 2" drill.
1:00 · Demonstrate a horizontal stack using cones as players, point out the different passing lanes and how receivers work in pairs to create spaces for eachother (one cuts short while the other deep). Explain concept of defensive switches and communication.
1:15 · Do the "horizontal stack, diamond" drill.
1:50 · Stretch

Day 3

0:00 · Warm-up
0:20 · Demonstrate throwing while marked. Use fakes and break the force.
0:30 · Do a "break force, simple" drill.
0:50 · Demonstrate a dump & swing reset using cones as players. Explain where the dump is ideally positioned in relation to the force (to prevent defender poaching), the various cutting possibilities (up the line vs. back), the short-fill and the importance of eye-contact. Explain also how the defender must shut down the passing lane before placing the mark.
