Bravas Double Up the Awesome with League Title and Spirit of the Game Award
22 DECEMBER 2017, by Oscar Blanco
On Sunday, December 3rd, 18 teams braved the cold beaches of Castelldefels to play the final phase of 2017's Lliga Catalana d'Ultimate.
The five teams in the top pool were well matched such that none managed to coast to a clear victory by winning all of their four games. Nothing could be decided until Bravas were finally able to proclaim themselves champions by beating the formidable Sharks in the final game of the season. The Sharks took second place followed by Disterics, Salty, and Peixets to round out the elites of Catalan beach ultimate for 2017.
Bravas were also named Spirit of the Game winners provoking a joyful celebration that equaled, if not surpassed, that of the league title. In a happy coincidence, the prize was awarded on International Spirit of the Game Day.
In the pool to decide which 2nd division teams would move up to 1st and, conversely, which 1st division teams would drop down to the 2nd, our second team, Bravas B, fought successfully to stay in the top division. The pool was dominated by the Mamadiadors who won all their games with a clinical surety making them a team to watch for 2018. Bravas B finsihed behind them in second place. Congratulations go also to third-place M&M for punching their ticket to the first division.
The success of this year's league highlights the impressive growth of ultimate in Catalonia as seen in the level of play and the proliferation of "second" or even "third" teams from the different clubs. We all look forward to both the grass and beach Lliga competitions for 2018!
